Infrastructure

The Terminal stands out as the only multi-purpose deep-water terminal in Portugal.

Offering exceptional facilities for the reception and handling of large vessels with a draught of up to 17 metres. This capacity ensures maximum operational flexibility and an effective response to the demands of international trade.

With a total area of 400,000 m² and 1,000 metres of quay, spread across four berthing areas, the terminal allows for the simultaneous handling of different vessels and types of cargo, ensuring high levels of efficiency, productivity and reliability.

The characteristics of the Sines Multipurpose Terminal – owing to the length of the quay and its depth – allow for the simultaneous berthing and operation of various types of vessels carrying different kinds of cargo, from different countries, connecting the world to Europe and Europe to the world.

Pier 1A

Berth 1A – Berth for bulk carriers

Dimensions

  • It allows ships up to 330 metres in length to berth, with a maximum draught of 17 metres.

Handling

  • Dedicated to the unloading of bulk carriers;
  • It has a system that allows for the unloading of ships and the stacking of bulk cargo in the yard in a continuous cycle;
  • The system enables the high-speed unloading of large ships (190k tonnes).

Car Parks A, B and C

80,000 m² multi-purpose car park

Multipurpose Area (80,000 square metres):

Paved areas:

  • (A): 12,000 square metres;
  • (C): 20,000 square metres.

Earthworks area:

  • (B): 48,000 square metres.

Designed:

The expansion of the tarmac surface in area (B), in order to accommodate new projects.

Capacity:

  • Suitable for container storage, large volumes of bulk cargo and project cargo;
  • High ground-bearing capacity in paved areas, ideal for special project cargo.

Ports and the Iberian railway network for increased competitiveness

Strategically located to link the Atlantic with the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, the Terminal combines deep-water maritime access, rail links and proximity to the main logistics and industrial centres, reinforcing its position as a logistics hub for the Iberian and European markets.

Internal Line

Internal Railway Line

  • The Terminal’s internal railway section allows trains of up to 480 metres in length to operate;
  • Furthermore, given the capacity of the Port of Sines’ railway infrastructure, it is possible to operate trains of up to 649 metres in length on the Port line. These can be operated within the Terminal by splitting them into two trains;
  • The Terminal also has two locomotives dedicated exclusively to moving trains within its premises.

Interconnection

Sines–Badajoz–Madrid line
More than just a connection: a global gateway for distribution.

  • The Terminal’s internal railway line is directly connected to the national rail network, enabling the receipt and dispatch of freight by rail to various destinations across the Iberian Peninsula;

  • The rail link to Badajoz and Madrid improves access to Spain’s main logistics and industrial centres, creating the conditions for a more efficient distribution of goods across the interior of the Peninsula;

  • The completion of the Évora–Elvas section by the end of 2026 will improve the rail link between Sines and Spain, reducing distances and journey times and enhancing the competitiveness of the Sines–Badajoz–Madrid logistics corridor;

  • The Terminal’s strategic location, combined with its capacity to handle different types of cargo, creates the conditions for the development of short sea solutions, linking Sines to various coastal destinations in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and other European and African markets.

Equipment

Terminal equipment

The Terminal currently has its own equipment suitable for different types of cargo, enabling it to be handled safely and efficiently.

  • 2 LHM 420 (124 tonnes) and LHM 550 (144 tonnes) mobile cranes;

  • 2 Ship-to-Shore (STS) unloaders, each with a capacity of 42 tonnes;

  • 2 stacker-reclaimers;

  • 2 reach stackers (45 tonnes each);

  • 7 wheel loaders;

  • 2 Forklift trucks;

  • 1 Shiploader;

  • 1 Hopper.
